Congratulations on being one of the delegates chosen from the Junior class of Kansas high schools.  You have the unique experience of participation in "Government in Action".  You will  be involved in government processes few voters ever experience on the city, county and state levels.  You are or about to reach legal voting age.  Soon you will be helping to decide who our leaders will be.  It has been said that your citizenship is your most priceless possession.  After you attend Sunflower Girls State, you will be better prepared to develop and use your citizenship to its fullest potential.

Sunflower Girls State is not for the faint-hearted; it is not for the closed-minded; it is not for those who watch life from the sidelines.  Sunflower Girls State can be an excellent, challenging and moving experience.  You will develop friendships that will last a lifetime.  You will connect with the cream of the crop of young women, like yourself, from across Kansas.  You will have your political views challenged.  You will have your endurance limits challenged.  You will have your psychological comfort zone challenged.  We challenge you to get involved from the beginning and you will get the most out of your fast-paced week at Sunflower Girls State.

Sunflower Girls State is NOT a camp.  It is a participation school in local, county and state government through various activities.  There is very little free time.  It is not ALL work.  It is not all play.  BUT IT IS ALL WORTH IT.

SCHOLARSHIPS

A scholarship is awarded on the basis of the Scholarship Test, referencing your week spent at Girls State, by the Sunflower Girls State Alumnae Association.  The winner receives a $250.00 scholarship for the school of their choice.

Samsung American Legion Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to participants of Girls State and Boy's State by the national organization of the American Legion.  One state representative from Girl's State and Boy's State will be awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship and entered into the final competition.  The winner is awarded a scholarship equal to the total cost of a four year degree at the college or university of their choice.  There are also 2nd, 3rd and 4th place scholarships awarded.  This is a wonderful opportunity for the delegates to Girls State and Boy's State as they are the only participants eligible, and if chosen a finalist, well on their way financially to a college education.

ELIGIBILITY: High School Juniors who participate in and complete either an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program and be a direct descendant, i.e. child, grandchild, great-grandchild, etc. or a legally adopted child, of a U.S. veteran who served during a period of war.

Periods of war include:
World War I - Apr. 6, 1979 - Nov. 11, 1918
World War II - Dec. 7, 1941 - Dec. 31, 1946
Korean War - June 25, 1950 - Jan. 31, 1955
Vietnam War - Feb. 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975
